Beginner's Experience as a First Pair of Shoes
Reviewed in the United States on 13 March 2016Verified Purchase
I'm relatively new to climbing. I've been frequenting the climbing gym two times a week for the last 5 months. About 3 months in, I decided that I was going to stick with the sport and wanted to buy my own equipment; I had been borrowing the gym's equipment up until then. These shoes were recommended to me by a staff member at the gym who I think is an incredible climber. He told me they were great all around shoes. I've been wearing them for about 2 months and I would agree. I'm currently climbing V3 & V4 boulder problems and projecting up V5 & V6s, Top roping and lead climbing 5.11s. Gym only. My gym doesn't currently have routes that exceed 5.12s and I can't do the 5.12s yet - all those routes are slopers and jibs and I don't have the hand strength yet... the shoes will hold it though.
When I bought these, I immediately noticed a jump in the difficulty of the routes I was able to climb. The C4 rubber has a lot of grip. The rare times that I lose traction, I'm under an aggressive overhang and trying to stick a small jib. I would have thought that a slip-on shoe would fall off my feet under torque, but they haven't at all; even when wedging them in the cracks. The C4 rubber is also pretty soft. I can feel the wall and holds through the soul of the shoe and can really get a good hold of features with contours. The shoe's weak point is apparent when there's only a dime sized spot to get the shoe on. It will still hold on to those tiny bits but probably not as confidently as a shoe with a harder soul. But I wouldn't dog the shoe for that... it does so much VERY well even if it's not exceptionally great at any one thing.
Size wise, it was recommended to me to go with the smallest size that I could fit my foot into (up to 2 sizes down). That sounded crazy to me, especially with a shoe like this that's really about feeling the rock. Against that advise, I went 1/2 size under my street shoes. I bought 11.5 where I normally wear a 12 in running shoes. It was uncomfortably tight to the point where I had to walk on my heels and stay off my toes. I would also feel the need to take them off every 15 to 20 minutes or so. They have since stretched to fit my feet perfectly and, although they are certainly tight, they are now quite comfortable. I expect that I will always have a pair of these in my climbing rotation, and that said, the next time I will try buying true to my shoe size (12); although I never regretted getting the 1/2 size down. They only seem to stretch as much as my foot demands. This is after climbing two times a week for the last 2 months. By the way, they still make my feet red.
I will likely update the fit 3 or 4 months down the road when they've worn in more. I'm also planning on taking them outdoor climbing when the weather gets warmer. As a beginner, I have no complaints and have noticed no shortcomings. Nothing about these shoes is currently holding me back from doing my best. I would recommend these to anyone.

Top Boulderschuh

Genialer Boulder Schuh!

Good but..

Grips decent, there reasonably comfortable. Feel a Touch bigger than other shoes of the same size I own. But all round a decent shoe. The red colour does run when worn, so be prepared to have either red socks or red feet. There ok for the price but for an extra little bit you can get 5:10vcs, which in my opinion are better and give you more confidence on the wall/rock.
