I know. Helmets. Most people don’t like wearing them for a variety of reasons. I highly recommend it for any activity that can potentially damage your head.
This is the top of the line Petzl helmet for sport category (I have a different one for their professional line.)
Hands down this is my favorite of all the brands I have tried. Why? It’s ultra lightweight (I didn’t notice I was wearing them until rocks fell on it), it protects your head, and it’s very comfortable. I bought the right size by following the measuring method and it fits perfectly. Easy to adjust, put on or remove, and I can attach compatible Petzl headlamps on it for early morning or cavern climbs/descents. It is also vented so it feels comfortable and not sweaty damp. It also protects the sides. Comes with replaceable inner pads.
I was at an outdoor climb and not lead belaying yet, and we inspected the route a bit. Some of the areas had loose rocks so I told people to put on their helmets. Sure enough, as the lead climber started the ascent, some rocks the size of pebbles to large gravel had started falling. They just bounced off my helmet as I was belaying, and some of them came down from about 80ft. That could be quite painful if it was a direct hit to the head. I inspected the helmet and not a ding or chip (your mileage may vary).
In summary, this is my favorite climbing helmet for recreational use, it’s comfortable, has good protection, easy to adjust, and ultra light. I will buy this again after some wear or if I take a significant fall with head impact (never happened yet in my life.)
