Ultimate Guide to 17 Rock Gyms in Malaysia | Rock Climbing in KL and more

Ultimate List of 17 Rock Climbing Gyms in Malaysia

Singapore has kicked off 2020 with up to almost 20+ rock climbing and bouldering gyms island-wide. That is a lot of climbing gyms for a small country. What about our neighbouring country next door – Malaysia?

Seems like they are also starting to catch up, with a growing number of top rope, lead climbing and bouldering gyms in operation and coming up. So for the Malaysians who are dissatisfied about the lack of sufficient rock climbing gym options in their country, or for the rock climbing enthusiasts visiting Malaysia/ moving to Malaysia, here’s

The Ultimate list of 17 Rock Gyms in Malaysia:

1. Rock World, Johor Bahru

I visited Rock World about 5 years ago near February period with some Singapore rock climbing friends. It is located conveniently just across the border of Singapore – at Johor Bahru.

Not too much time needed to travel to given its close proximity to Singapore customs, but its better to drive there then try to get there on your own with public transport as the gym is located in an industrial area and a bit inaccessible by bus ( taxis might not be too reliable too).
A small but very cosy gym, it is a decent size to spend 2 hours there exploring the routes and options.

2. Putra Jaya Challenge Climb Park

If you are looking for a fun day of adventure on top of rock climbing, this Putra Jaya Challenge Park is the best for you as it consists of a skate and thrill park as well as mountain bike trails for bikers to hang around and master their craft. Climbers, skaters, bikers..what a crowd of people with great energy and passion!

3. Camp 5, One Utama Kuala Lumpur

My all time favourite Kuala Lumpur Rock Climbing Gym – Camp 5. Its the most stunning indoor rock climbing gym I have ever been to, located at the highest level/ roof of the One Utama shopping mall, giving it its tremendous high ceilings, great views of the city and stunning wide variety of routes and options for boulders and climbers alike.

14. Hangout Rock Climbing Gym ( 2 Outlets)

Hangout What? Or Where you may ask.

Well, here at Hangout Rock Climbing Gym in Penang, its the experience of helping people discover that they have long-dormant, hidden ninja talents — scaling seemingly insurmountable heights that would make even Kakashi sensei proud.

67212081 2576455315738959 1824846546538070016 n 1

It may just be that long sigh of relief, seeing your hyper-energetic child finally burn all that excess exuberance at the kids section in the climbing gym, toprope walls or even chasing around HangOut’s elusive resident mascot/cat — Grace the Gray Cat. Yes, they have a gym cat!

From relaxing at the vantage point, sipping on their refreshing cold-pressed orange juice, while observing the mere mortals below struggling hard against the hard truths taught by painful crimps, micro edges and fat slopers. Here at HangOut Climbing Gym, it’s about coming on your own and leaving the place at closing time, with three more friends in tow, chattering away on how hard that benchmark MoonBoard route — while on the way to the famous late-night Char Koay Teow stall. Perhaps that’s what one can expect when they visit HangOut Climbing Gym here in Penang.

15. Project Rock @ IKEA

Latest update! Project Rock has recently opened its 2nd outlet over in our favourite furniture and lifestyle megastore – IKEA Batu Kawan. So it makes a perfect 2-in-1 day trip to do a bit of climbing with your family followed by browsing through the beautiful interactive store, ending off the day with some meatballs and hotdogs.

Project Rock @ IKEA Batu Kawan is the second and bigger climbing gym since its first inception in Tanjung Bungah. It features 3000 square feet of bouldering wall and 3000 square feet of tall walls. It also has a lead wall section. On the top rope wall, it has 3 auto-belays and 8 top rope with ground anchor belay system.

With the ground anchor belay system, it makes it very easy and safe for beginners to belay and experience rock climbing! I personally love those while waiting for my climbing friends who are late to arrive. The gym being the newest in town at the moment, strives to continue the mission to set a range of quality routes that are fun for beginners all the way to experienced climbers!

It looks like indoor rock climbing is really taking off in Malaysia. It is very popular here in Calgary likely because we have so much outdoor climbing nearby in the Rocky Mountains.
