The prAna Momento top is such a gorgeous design – the strappy racerback is intricate and fashionable and we can’t get enough of it. What’s more, the prAna Momento is available in a range of pretty colours, so you can easily match it to the rest of your climbing kit. The material (prAna’s Luxara fabric) is soft to touch and does not inhibit movement at all. If you have a smaller chest size, the top can be worn without a sports bra, as it has an interior shelf and removable cups. If you have a larger cup size, you’ll probably still have to wear a sports bra with this top – it doesn’t offer a massive amount of support. Sadly, when worn with a sports bra, the intricate design of the racerback cannot be appreciated to the full effect.

Pros

  • Gorgeously intricate back design
  • Available in a range of colours
  • Functions similar to a sports bra – you could go braless!
  • Soft and flexible material

Cons

  • Racerback design makes pairing it with the right sports bra a challenge

Lululemon’s Cool Racerback is a simple yet effective product that functions well as a rock climbing top. It is made of soft and flexible Luon fabric, that does not inhibit movement and wicks moisture away quickly. The material is designed with a four-way stretch technology that means it can withstand a lot of wear without losing its stretch or form-fitting shape. Further, it’s available in some great colours and is easy to pair with a racerback sports bra.

Pros

  • Moisture-wicking material (Luon fabric)
  • Material has a ‘four-way stretch’ design
  • Does not lose its shape, even after several washes

Cons

  • Simple and basic design compared to many other tops on the market

This is a fun tank from Lorna Jane – and the slogan is a good mantra to keep in mind when you’re on your rock climbing project! Lorna Jane’s tank is super lightweight and fresh looking (probably because of the pretty peppermint colour scheme). The fabric has a ‘two-way stretch’ design, so is unlikely to lose its shape after washing and general wear and tear. This is not the most high-quality product listed – the material is thinner than some of the other tank tops – but we just love it because of its quirky design!

Pros

  • Attractive peppermint colour
  • Fun and inspiring slogan!
  • Lightweight and flexible material

Cons

  • Quality slightly flimsy

This is a gorgeous sports bra that will look great under a backless or strappy tank top. The design is intricate and the bra is available in a wide range of attractive colours. We love that prAna is environmentally conscious with its manufacturing – this product is made of recycled and repurposed materials. The only issue is with the level of support offered – prAna market this as a medium support sports bra, but we think it’s more like low support. These also run pretty small, so try before you buy!

Pros

  • Detailed racerback design
  • Available in a range of gorgeous colours
  • Made of recycled/repurposed material
  • One year warranty

Cons

  • Claims to be a medium impact bra – more like low impact

The Lululemon swiftly tech long-sleeved top is designed with running in mind. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t make a great climbing top though! Because it’s built for running, the ventilation system is high tech – the top consists has mesh panels and seems that promote airflow. Further, the material is 4% Silverescent X-static fabric, which works to prevent the build-up of odours. In moderate climates, this is a great top, the long-sleeved design means it will keep your skin safe from the sun. We probably wouldn’t choose to wear this if it was really hot though – a vest top and SPF 50 would be a better option!

Pros

  • Wicks moisture away quickly
  • Versatile – offers protection from the sun and the cold
  • Mesh panels promote ventilation
  • Silverescent x-static technology prevents odours

Cons

  • Might be too warm in hot and humid climates

The prAna Women’s Sway Tank is an attractive ‘2 in 1’ sports tank and sports bra. The colour scheme of the sports bra and tank complement each other, and we love the way the tank top sits – the material is floaty and soft, and it also wicks moisture well. The lower-cut scooped back means this is a great option for climbing in warmer weather, as airflow will not be an issue. One potential issue is the sizing of the sports bra – if you have a larger cup size the bra may not fit comfortably.

Pros

  • ‘2 in 1’ design – sports bra and tank top
  • Lightweight and soft material
  • Comes in a range of attractive colours
  • Moisture-wicking material

Cons

  • In Built Sports bra does not offer a huge amount of support

The Columbia Women’s Saturday Trail pants are primarily hiking trousers, but perform well as climbing trousers. They are great for climbing in hotter climates as they can easily be converted into shorts by zipping the bottom part of the trouser leg off. They are lightweight and wick moisture quickly, and the material is designed to be extra resistant to stains such as mud. We love the neutral tones these climbing pants are available in, but they’re not the stretchiest trousers and might be a little restrictive for some climbers.

Pros

  • Can be converted to shorts
  • Available in a wide range of pleasant neutral tones
  • Made of water and stain-resistant fabric

Cons

  • Material is not so stretchable

These are wonderfully soft and flexible leggings that will allow a full range of movement. Lululemon’s very own Luxtreme fabric is ultra-soft to the touch, wicks moisture incredibly well, and will keep you cool on even the hottest days. The fabric is thick enough that you feel supported, but we don’t know how well these would hold up if they were exposed to sharp rock such as limestone. On the other hand, they look fabulous, so are perfect for looking great in the climbing gym (and beyond!).

Pros

  • Incredibly soft, silky texture
  • Super flexible and lightweight
  • Trendy – you could wear these away from the crag!
  • Luxtreme fabric is moisture-wicking

Cons

  • Material not as durable as other brands

The prAna Women’s Halle Pants are a flattering and durable pair of pants that will give you the right amount of stretch and flex for climbing in. They are made of water-resistant fabric that will dry quickly and wick sweat away, keeping you cool. The material is also UPF 50, which means not only will your legs be safe from the sun, but these pants will work to keep you cool by acting as a barrier to the sun’s heat. Further, the Halle pants can be easily converted into capri pants by rolling up the bottom of the trouser legs for even more relief on hot days. These are great pants, but we found the sizing a bit odd, and even after trying on a few pairs we still couldn’t get a pair that fit like a dream. Hopefully you will have better luck!

Pros

  • Water repellent fabric
  • UPF fabric to keep your skin safe and regulate your temperature
  • Stretchy and soft fabric
  • Can be converted into capri pants

Cons

  • Sizing not as accurate as other models

The Alo Yoga women’s leggings are wonderfully thick and soft, and the absence of side-seems gives them even more comfort points. The material (a nylon/spandex blend) is smooth to touch and has an attractive sheen, and the high waisted fit is flattering. These are not the best at wicking moisture away – and in some of the colours sweat will show up a bit! They might be best kept for cooler climates because of this.

Pros

  • Thick nylon/spandex blend fabric
  • Super thick flexible material
  • No side seams

Cons

  • Not particularly good at wicking moisture – sweat shows!

If we had to pick our favourite rock climbing top and pair rock climbing leggings from this list we’d go for the prAna Women’s Momento top, paired with the Lululemon Wunder Under High Rise tights. We love the intricate design of the Momento top and think it would look great paired with a colourful pair of the LululemonWunder Under Hi-Rise tights. Both items will keep you cool and wick sweat away from the body as well as you climb.

What You Should Know Before Buying Women Rock Climbing Clothes

Key Features For Climbing Clothes

Women’s rock climbing clothing is first and foremost designed to allow for mobility and a wide range of movement. Rock climbing is a sport that requires suppleness and flexibility, and clothing must be designed to accommodate for this. Since rock climbing is a demanding sport, almost all rock climbing leggings and rock climbing tops will be designed to wick sweat and moisture quickly.

Some rock climbing clothes will be made of durable fabrics (and rightly so – take it from me how easy it is to snag a hole in your leggings when climbing on limestone rocks in places like Krabi or Kalymnos!). Last but not least, a key aspect of women’s rock climbing clothing is the aesthetic! Rock climbing clothing is often trendy and colourful. Who doesn’t want to look good when they’re climbing hard?

Material And Climate

Most fabrics used by climbing clothing companies will reflect whether they are intended to keep you warm or to keep you cool. Look for fabrics such as Merino wool which are excellent for both warm and cold weather( Merino wool is a great insulator that regulates your body temperature and wicks any moisture or sweat quickly). It definitely helps to also have a warm winter jacket just in case it gets chilly with the wind or sudden downpour.

Multiple Usages It help

Rock climbing clothing is multi-purpose and can be worn for many other sports pursuits. For instance, rock climbing leggings and rock climbing tops are great for yoga and pilates due to their design which prioritizes free movement. Apart from really chic-looking female climbing or bouldering shoes designed these days, we also think climbing clothing can look immensely flattering ( and we’re not the only ones), and it’s an easy and comfortable option to wear around the city on a dress down day.

Pants Versus Leggings

As a female climber, you will be presented with the option of wearing rock climbing shorts, pants or rock climbing leggings. Generally, leggings will always offer a greater range of movement than non climbing specific pants. However, many brands have designed climbing-specific pants that offer the same wide range of movement as leggings, and that also tend to be more durable and robust than leggings. So it’s really up to your personal preference on this one!

Precautions

Feeling comfortable in your clothing can help you perform as a rock climber, both indoors and out. Being comfortable can mean a range of things; getting the fabric and fit right is a big factor, but feeling like you look good can be just as big a deal! In general, we recommend making sure your clothing is moisture wicking and breathable and paying close consideration to the temperature of the climbing destination before you plan your outfit.

Questions and Answers About Women Rock Climbing Clothes

How Should Climbing Pants Fit?

Climbing pants should be loose or stretchy enough on the legs that you can have a full range of movement. This is particularly important around the upper thigh area – if the pants are too tight around this area, a high-step climbing move will be difficult to do. The pants should also have a comfortable waist that isn’t too tight. We prefer a high waist so that the pants cover the skin where our harness sits.

Is Wearing Jeans For Rock Climbing Advisable?

Some people will turn up to the crag or the gym in normal ‘high street’ jeans. If they are stretchy and don’t inhibit movement, this is fine. But most jeans will be too tight and restrictive to be suitable. Further, denim is notoriously bad for holding moisture rather than wicking it away. It’s not a hard-no, but there are so many great climbing pants on the market that are more suitable!

Why Is Stretchy Jeans Or Pants Helpful In Climbing?

The stretch and flex of a pair of pants or leggings is probably the most important feature that determines how suitable they are for climbing in. Rock climbing requires a lot of suppleness and flexibility, and pants that inhibit this will actively work to make climbing more difficult. If you can’t execute moves like a high-step, then you have to find an alternative beta that may be more difficult.

Can I Wear Just A Sports Bra For Climbing?

Wearing just a sports-bra when rock climbing is something you will see many female Instagram climbers doing. Whenever I’ve tried this, our rock climbing harness cuts into my waist, and I find it pretty uncomfortable! If you’re going for this look, make sure the sports bra offers a lot of support and coverage… You don’t want to be preoccupied with your modesty when you’re climbing! Ultimately, don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t wear when you’re rock climbing – if you feel comfortable, then go for it.
