The prAna Momento top is such a gorgeous design – the strappy racerback is intricate and fashionable and we can’t get enough of it. What’s more, the prAna Momento is available in a range of pretty colours, so you can easily match it to the rest of your climbing kit. The material (prAna’s Luxara fabric) is soft to touch and does not inhibit movement at all. If you have a smaller chest size, the top can be worn without a sports bra, as it has an interior shelf and removable cups. If you have a larger cup size, you’ll probably still have to wear a sports bra with this top – it doesn’t offer a massive amount of support. Sadly, when worn with a sports bra, the intricate design of the racerback cannot be appreciated to the full effect.

What You Should Know Before Buying women rock climbing clothes

Key Features for Climbing Clothes

Women’s rock climbing clothing is first and foremost designed to allow for mobility and a wide range of movement. Rock climbing is a sport that requires suppleness and flexibility, and clothing must be designed to accommodate for this. Since rock climbing is a demanding sport, almost all rock climbing leggings and rock climbing tops will be designed to wick sweat and moisture quickly. Some rock climbing clothes will be made of durable fabrics (and rightly so – take it from me how easy it is to snag a hole in your leggings when climbing on limestone rocks in places like Krabi or Kalymnos!). Last but not least, a key aspect of women’s rock climbing clothing is the aesthetic! Rock climbing clothing is often trendy and colourful. Who doesn’t want to look good when they’re climbing hard?

Material and Climate

When it comes to selecting materials for your climbing clothing, it’s crucial to consider the climate in which you’ll be adventuring. Different fabrics have distinct properties that make them suitable for varying conditions. For instance, Merino wool is a top contender in the climbing sphere due to its dual functionality. This incredible fabric serves not only as a fantastic insulator, keeping you warm on those chilly ascents but also regulates your body temperature during intense climbs in warmer weather, efficiently wicking away sweat. You can find more on the properties of Merino wool [here](https://merinowoolgear.com/the-science-behind-merino-wool/).

Multiple Usages

Rock climbing clothing is multi-purpose and can be worn for many other sports pursuits. For instance, rock climbing leggings and rock climbing tops are great for yoga and pilates due to their design which prioritizes free movement. Apart from really chic-looking female climbing or bouldering shoes designed these days, we also think climbing clothing can look immensely flattering ( and we’re not the only ones), and it’s an easy and comfortable option to wear around the city on a dress down day.

Pants versus Leggings

As a female climber, you will be presented with the option of wearing rock climbing shorts, pants or rock climbing leggings. Generally, leggings will always offer a greater range of movement than non climbing specific pants. However, many brands have designed climbing-specific pants that offer the same wide range of movement as leggings, and that also tend to be more durable and robust than leggings. So it’s really up to your personal preference on this one!

Precautions

While the thrill of rock climbing is incomparable, safeguarding oneself shouldn’t be an afterthought. Comfort is king – both in terms of how the outfit feels and its functionality! Get yourself clothing that not just accentuates your style, but serves a purpose. The fabric must be given prime importance; moisture wicking and breathable materials can drastically enhance your climbing performance. Further, the fit has to be right. Loose, baggy clothes could get caught on crags, or obstruct movement while climbing. Temperature too, plays an essential role in your clothing choices. Ensure to assess the local climate of your climbing destination beforehand. A hot or cold climate requires specific attire best suited for these circumstances. In essence, your clothing should serve as a second skin, offering the freedom to climb without hindrance.

Questions and Answers About women rock climbing clothes

How should climbing pants fit?

Climbing pants should be loose or stretchy enough on the legs that you can have a full range of movement. This is particularly important around the upper thigh area – if the pants are too tight around this area, a high-step climbing move will be difficult to do. The pants should also have a comfortable waist that isn’t too tight. We prefer a high waist so that the pants cover the skin where our harness sits.

Is wearing jeans for rock climbing advisable?

Some people will turn up to the crag or the gym in normal ‘high street’ jeans. If they are stretchy and don’t inhibit movement, this is fine. But most jeans will be too tight and restrictive to be suitable. Further, denim is notoriously bad for holding moisture rather than wicking it away. It’s not a hard-no, but there are so many great climbing pants on the market that are more suitable!

Why is stretchy jeans or pants helpful in climbing?

The stretch and flex of a pair of pants or leggings is probably the most important feature that determines how suitable they are for climbing in. Rock climbing requires a lot of suppleness and flexibility, and pants that inhibit this will actively work to make climbing more difficult. If you can’t execute moves like a high-step, then you have to find an alternative beta that may be more difficult.

Can I wear just a sports bra for climbing?

Donning just a sports bra for climbing can be fine, as long as it provides enough support and coverage. Personally, I’ve found the harness chaffing against the waist a bit bothersome. However, if it makes you comfortable and self-assured, why not!

Should I wear shorts to rock climb?

We generally find that longer shorts are suitable for climbing, while shorter shorts that don’t cover the leg skin under your harness will be pretty uncomfortable – the harness leg loops will bite into the skin. We generally think knee-length shorts are the best option for this reason.
